Happiness is knowing what you want to do with the rest of your life isn’t it?

 In Happiness

Well I must admit I hadn’t really thought about it.  I mean, until recently that is, when during a chat with my clinical supervisor I was reflecting on a current dilemma, namely what I could include in a 48 hour programme for this autumn’s coming retreat!  My challenge you see was that having spent a long time working in the training world where I am forced to think in terms of learning outcomes, aims, objectives, content and lesson plans I am used to ‘doing’ things with groups.  No slouching on my academic watch!  However my natural creativity and inspiration had escaped me on this occasion and bemoaning my state to her I was invited to consider a new paradigm.

So we talked in terms of being, rather than doing, about the feasibility of grooming alpacas? in autumn? of felting? of doing nothing? of collaborating with the local ‘alternative guru’s’, about circle and the wisdom of the elders, about who might come, even about using the outdoors and treading ancient paths to stimulate and support new ways of thinking.

As usual my supervisor, (best described as a mine of useful ideas and well able to lob in the odd reality check type of question to ground me), told me that when she had run similar events she had been surprised to discover that most people haven’t a clue when asked what they want to do with the rest of their lives.  Reportedly more time is spent planning a holiday than career or even retirement, which lets face it in this day and age can equate to another 20-30 years beyond the date when formal work ends.

That set me thinking about what I would answer if similarly challenged.

Did I know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life?.  Indeed what was my mission?

Speaking personally the answer is YES I do know what I want to do with the rest of my life, but then I have done a lot of what those in the trade would refer to as ‘advanced personal development’ and I am pleased to report that for those not in the know it isn’t as scary as it sounds!

The long and the short of it is that I know I want to work with my husband and life partner in our business.  I want to work with people to help them grow and develop so they can fulfil their dreams and their mission.  I want to help them build or even regain their confidence and self worth so they can feel comfortable to show people who they really are without anxiety, fear or concern that they will be judged as ‘less than’.  I want to work with others to build heartled communities where people feel cherished, supported and safe.  Where people can truly connect, communicate, derive comfort, and actively collaborate to create solutions that work for them rather than giving their power away, seeking solace through bitching, backbiting and blaming others for all that they perceive is wrong in their lives.

Aspirational? Maybe.  Doable? Certainly!

The last word, as I close I am reminded of the words to a very beautiful song I once sang backed by the Light Cavalry Band at a charity concert  Strangely enough since we have been talking about life’s mission the song was featured in the film ‘The Mission’;  I have included both the original and an english translation and a link to the piece being sung by Il Divo.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLmVlUbtLUI&list=RDwLmVlUbtLUI

Nella Fantasia

Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo giusto

Li tutti vivano in pace e in onesta

Io sogno d’anime che sono sempre libere

Come le nuvole che volano

Pien’ d’umanita in fondo all’anima

Pien’ d’umanita in fondo all’anima

In My Fantasy

In my imagination I see a fair world,

Everyone lives in peace and in honesty there.

I dream of souls that are always free,

Like the clouds that fly,

Full of humanity in the depths of the soul.

In my imagination I see a bright world,

Even the night is less dark there.

I dream of souls that are always free,

Like clouds that fly.

In my imagination there exists a warm wind,

That breathes on the cities, like a friend.

I dream of souls that are always free,

Like clouds that fly,

Full of humanity in the depths of the soul.
